Since the start of SSCT, annual workshops on in vitro toxicology have been held in the autumn each year ( August-October ). They have been organised by a member of SSCT on a volunteer basis and the place for the meetings have rotated betweeen the Nordic countries or been arranged as merged meetings together with other oragnisations with similar interests. The duration of the meetings have generally been three to four days and the number of participants have been between 50 and 100. The scientific presentations have usually been 15 minutes platform lectures. Three regular sessions have always been A. Mechanisms and biotransformation; B. In vitro toxicity testing; and C. Validation of in vitro methods. These sessions have been supplemented by special sessions, such as kinetics, QSAR, genetic toxicology and education in in vitro techniques. Usually a few guest lecturers have been invited from non-Scandinavian countries every year. The proceedings have been published as short 4-6 page papers in ATLA ( Alternatives to Laboratory Animals, published by FRAME, Nottingham, UK ), in the spring-summer issue the following year. The only exceptions to this rule were the 1983 and 1984 meetings.
